Great alternative Jan 07, 2010 My boyfriend got this nalgene for me (and one for himself) not because we're anti-plastic, but primarily because you can cook/boil water in them if necessary while out and about in the wild. I've been using it as my primary bottle, replacing my classic HDPE bottle (which doesn't contain BPA, anyway). I take my water bottle with me everywhere- school, work, shopping, traveling, hiking...so it's noticeably heavier to carry around than my HDPE bottle, but again, I carry it everywhere in my purse and have decided it will double as a weapon if need be, especially if it's full :).
The stainless bottle doesn't get the kind of grimy-wash-me-now smell that my HDPE even used to get after awhile. I know nalgene says that the products are odor-resistant, but after using it for nearly 6 years, I think that property has dissipated. I felt compelled to put my HDPE bottle in the dishwasher to make sure that the previous couple of week's buildup of germs were completely destroyed, but the stainless version I just rinse out with a little warm water and soap, and it is refreshed and clean again.
I know a lot of people complain that the stainless steel makes the water taste metallic, but I've never noticed this at all, I think the water tastes a bit better, it seems to stay fresher actually. Maybe it's in my head.I also used to designate one of my nalgene bottles as the bottle I would use to add mix-ins with water to make flavored drinks, because no matter how many times I washed it or how hot the water was or how long it soaked, the bottle I used with drink mixes always smelled like the mixes. I don't have that problem with the stainless one, it really doesn't retain the smell and just a quick rinse gets the mix residue out of the bottle.
The stainless steel bottle also keeps my cold water cold for quite some time, a nice property of metal v. plastic. This will be great come summer, but hasn't been so great when it's freezing outside and our tap water comes out very frigid as well. Another reviewer also mentioned that the outside of the bottle got very hot when using hot water/liquids in it, which is also true of cold liquids/water.
My only complaint when comparing the HDPE v. stainless bottles is that when driving, I could easily remove the top off of the HDPE bottle with one hand, but can't with the stainless bottle- the lid almost vacuum seals with the bottle, and takes more than the effort of one hand. Besides that, I think it's a great bottle, I've been using mine everyday for almost two months, and it has no dings, scratches, or dents. It still looks like I just bought it. I think it's a very durable bottle, some other reviewers seem to have had some problems, but maybe it was just a bad bottle? Anyway, I'm really happy with mine, and will probably keep using it as my primary bottle over my HDPE bottle.

Built like a tank, but... Oct 08, 2009 This waterbottle is build like a tank! Dont worry about denting this bottle or breaking the cap. I own a Klean Kanteen and this waterbottle is good, but has dented a little too easily. We go backpacking fairly often and it would suffice as an alternative vessel for boiling water in or cooking a meal in. The lid is cinched on the bottle with a cord and is secure, but comes off easily if needed. Great bottle for ultra-lighters who could use this for a few different purposes.
The only two drawbacks that I have seen are sort of related. When I initially got this water bottle, there was a lot of metal dust still on the inside of the container. Had thrown it in the dish washer but I actually had to do some scrubbing to get this off.
The second problem I ran into was when I have washed it in the dish washer. The upper rim of the bottle where it curves to meet the mouth actually holds water on the inside. I couldn't figure out why my bottle smelled like the dishwasher for about a month. One day after I took it out of the dishwasher I noticed water dripping from the inside of the bottle when I moved it. I stuck my finger up inside and sure enough there was water pooled around this rim with little particles of food there.
The extra care for the cleaning doesn't make this a bad bottle, just thought that this would have been somethign that engineers would have picked up on the design. Just use a towel and dry this after it is has been in the dish washer.
Overall, I like this bottle and know that it will last for many years to come.
It works with standard Nalgene lids, mouth inserts, and MSR water filtration systems that screw onto Nalgene bottles.

Catchy idea, but bad quality Aug 27, 2009 I bought this bottle thinking, oh cool, more durable than Nalgene's plastic water bottle since its made out of stainless steel. However, this bottle is kinda flimsy and made out of poor quality. I have been using it just like I have been using my plastic one that I had for 6 years, but it already got so many dangs and surface damage on its bottom that it can't no longer stand on its own. I love the idea of being able to add hot and cold liquid, but it changes shape as if this was made out of thin metal. This bottle is not made for an active person like me, but rather for maybe an office worker that likes the look of stainless metal with a hint of the outdoors. I am actually very dissapointed in this bottle because I was so counting on it for my everday usage. I am returning it.

Made in China Aug 09, 2009 I don't have an opinion one way or another about the product itself. Buyers should be aware that, unlike other Nalgene Made in USA products, this steel bottle is actually manufactured by another company in China.
