Versatile bottle holder Jan 16, 2010
By Stephen M. Charme As a preliminary comment, the product I received is all black, which is fine for me, but just be aware in case you really like the green color that is depicted.
Nalgene is a well known company that makes quality products, and this bottle carrier is no exception. The material is durable and the product is well made. You can easily adjust the small strap to accommodate various size water bottles (I use primarily 20 oz and 24 oz, but you can go up to 32 oz) and the bottle is held securely in place with no danger of falling out. The shoulder strap is a generous size, and the carrier sits comfortably on your shoulder when walking or hiking. However the strap is not padded (I would not expect it to be at this price), so you might feel it if you carried a 32 oz bottle of water for more than an hour without drinking any of it. Although this product is intended for use with reuseable water bottles, you can use ordinary water bottles as well.
The gym in my office buidling has treadmills without bottle holders, so I loop this product with a bottle of water in it over one of the handles when I run so that I have easy access to my water.
I have also used this carrier to hold my water when running outside, but I note these caveats: [Note: see updates below that eliminate the caveats]
1. This product is NOT designed as a carrier for running. Therefore, unlike my waist carrier, which is snug to my body, this carrier will bounce around, though not enough to bother me.
2. I use this for running only in the winter, where my normal waist carrier feels uncomfortable with all my layers of clothing (I carry water even in subfreezing temperatures because I still perspire). I position the top of the shoulder strap so that it is under the collar of my running jacket, and keep the carrier just below my elbow. For me this position is the most comfortable, even with the bouncing around.
3. I do not use this to run in warmer weather because without the layers of clothing that I wear in the winter, the bouncing around seems more pronounced, and also because the shoulder strap tends to chafe against my neck. But as I said, this product is not intended for runners.
Finally, this product is not insulated, and does not claim to be, but will easily hold the Polar insulated water bottle (which I have reviewed on Amazon) as well as other insulated water bottles.
If you want to transport a bottle of water easily, and don't want to be limited to just one size, this product will do the trick. I recommend it.
Update March 19, 2010: I got so used to using this during the winter, that when we recently had a stretch of warm weather I was determined to find a way to use it when wearing just a tanktop. The solution proved easy. In warm weather I wear the SPIbelt (which I have reviewed on Amazon) to carry various items. I simply bought a clip at Home Depot and clipped the loose end of the strap on this product (which is slung over my shoulder and across my chest) to the SPIbelt and voila!--no chafing on my neck and this product stayed comfortably in place when I ran. I'm planning on using this instead of my regular waist water bottle holder during the warmer weather because I like the way it feels better.
Update September 10, 2010: This has become my only water bottle carrier for running during all seasons. I use the 27oz Smart Source stainless steel bottle (which I have reviewed on Amazon). With the way I have it rigged, I much prefer it to a waist water bottle carrier.
Would be a 5 if the water bottle didn't tend to fall out Oct 13, 2010

Good quality and generally nicely designed water bottle carrier bag.
My only complaint is the bottle is not secured in this carrier in any way, to if it tips below horizontal while you're carrying a water bottle in it, the water bottle will fall out and hit the ground. So you can't easily/carelessly just carry this around by holding on to the strap.
My solution is to thread the harness through the loop in the bottle screw top, which I think is kind of a kludge even though it does work.
