4durable feel,  Aug 29, 2009
By L. Donnelly
I have numerous stainless steel bottles from several manufacturers Kleen Kanteen, Sigg, and now this one. It is the heaviest gauge of all which is good for durability but maybe not worth the weight for hiking. does not fit most bike cages Still sweats plenty, and too hot to hold with boiling water, but all single walled stainless steel do the same. With so many accessories for the nalgene size standard how can you go wrong.

2The old "bait and switch" again  Jul 20, 2011
By Robert C. Babcock
I probably should have known better given the other reviews, but I too was suckered by the photo of the "Standard", foolishly thinking I'd get the bottle pictured. But like a couple other buyers I got the "Backpacker." It's a fairly nice bottle but not the one shown, and for my purposes inferior. The main issue is that the bottle shown (that you don't actually get) is 38 oz vs the 32 oz of the bottle you'll get. The real problem, though, is that I purchased two GSI cups to go with the bottles. The GSI's are designed to nest with the Standard Nalgene...and of course, they don't nest with the Backpacker.

How to rate this bottle? Since this "bait & switch" has been going on for a long time and nothing has been done about it, I have to knock off at least one star. And I'm taking off one more for the fact that the "Returns are easy" is a joke. I spent over an hour being lead in an endless loop trying to send them back. To be fair, it looks like Amazon was having some server problems but I tried to submit the return many times over the course of a day with no joy.

The product you order won't be what you get, but I'll briefly review the one you do get. It's well made, very sturdy and well thought out. But the bottom is much smaller than the top, making the bottle very tippy- it doesn't want to stand up. It won't nest with any bottle made for a standard Nalgene, so forget that.

I will say that by simple serendipity, these bottles fit some bain maries I already had. So even though they're an epic fail for the intended purpose, I am able to salvage them. Good thing seeing as returning them is a total cluster-frack.

EDIT: Okay, it's the morning of the 24th, July 2011. I see that within the last few hours Amazon has finally edited the listing to show the Backpacker. Had they done it a week or two ago it would have saved me a lot of trouble. But I will at least say that it's a very good bottle. Hopefully at some point they'll get the Standard in- it's just a better bottle for my purposes.

5Not much you can say about this product that has not already been said!  Jul 22, 2011
By Jaybles
This poduct is one of if not THE best water bottle on the market. Its uses are endless. You can boil water (for purification) in it. Cook in it. Make char cloth. Plus lots more. If you do not know what the importance of this water bottle is look up Dave Canterbury(this is what he uses). Look for his lessons on the 10 C's of survivability. The first five are most important. Container is one of the first three C's(right up there some where between a quallity Cuting tool and Cordage) because it is one of the hardest pieces of gear to reproduce. The quality of the container is very important also. The Nalgene Backpacker SS 32 oz. bottle is the best. Except no imitation. P.S. another reason it is perfect is that most chemical purification treatments measure by quarts and guess what 32 oz. equals one quart. Its perfect!!!

5This the 32oz version  Jul 19, 2011
By The Chief
Even though the picture shows a 38oz bottle (straight sides) this is in fact the 32oz bottle (tappered sides) At the time I purchased this item there was no reference to size of container other than the picture. I returned it as item not as described. It appears, they have since added a small remark about the size now. Just be forwarned here.

The product is light weight, great for camping and very versatile.

4some problems  May 27, 2011

I initially liked this bottle very much until I realized that it seems to get stinky inside a bit quicker than other bottles I have used in the past. I travel a lot and don't have access to my dishwasher which makes it so easy to wash it up completely. But there seems to be little nooks and crannies and when you hand wash it you must pay attention. Other than that I really do like this bottle quite a bit and works great with the maxpedition water holder.
